Owl Purdue On-Line writing lab for Movie/Film citations
Hi Bloggers! This week we will show video and or DVD clips for oral presentations! Click link above for a citation review for your film or TV show references. Things to remember: Cue up or know what scene or chapter you'll play before the speech. Adjust volume, face class rather than screen as much as possible, move around the room during the clip, set the clip up briefly but clearly (name of film, point of scene, maybe what to watch for). Quickly remove your media when finished to prep for the next speaker. For this blog, tell us what your all time favorite movie or program is? Why? Do you like humor or drama, or love stories or documentaries??? Finally, what can we learn about audience (our classmates) by seeing what others like and bring in to show us this week? PS: Showing the clip on Wed and hearing you guys crack up was fun for me! I love a good comedic moment, even at toddler viewing level!!! Hahahahaha...cough, choke, wheeze....
How appropriate that I showed the clip that I did. It just so happens that Golden Girls is my favorite television program of all time. There are very few shows out there that can boast such an outstanding cast, outstanding writing, and such a long and popular run. This would obviously put me more in a comedy category than any other, although I do have a wide array of interests when it comes to film. What's nice though, is that we can begin to know each other as classmates a little better by seeing how the class, as an audience responds to certain clips. The clip from "Crash" was especially memorable and thought-provoking.
ReplyDeleteThis is a hard one. I have several favorite movies. From the action packed James Bond films starring, Daniel Craig. And Matt Damon in the Jason Bourne sequels. Can't forget the romantic classic "An Affair to Remember". As you see, I am a fan of all types of movies-action, romance, drama, suspense, comedy, you name it. I really don't prefer one over the other, my mood does. Great actors captivate my attention, thus keeping me engaged. Just as some of our classmates have done with their presentations. So far, I've noticed most presentations have been humorous. I'm surprised everyone likes to laugh so much in the morning. Especially on Mondays!
ReplyDeleteOh man! This is a HARD blog. I think it was really interesting to see what people brought in, first of all. I think our class in particular has a GREAT sense of humor and are really good at drawing out interesting points from things you wouldn't expect. I love ALL movies. I'm a total movie geek with a passion for classic hollywood, but I have to say my favorite movie of all time is probably something like Angels in America, which was an HBO miniseries. It is SUPER long and I've still seen it over twenty times. The writing is beyond amazing, plus it has Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Mary Louise Parker and Patrick Wilson. It is basically an acting class in a film. Lately I've been REALLY into Inglorious Basterds..but that could pass, so I'll settle with Angels in America. It doesn't take much to please me, I really love to laugh, but a good cry is always nice.
ReplyDeleteK: Steve LOVED Angels in America!
ReplyDeleteThe classics are undeniably FABULOUS too Keona--BTW thanks for helping with the tv adjustments Monday from the back, that was helpful!
J--Golden Girls spoke to me in a NEW way during your gig!
I don't know ahhh. I guess I'll go to chilhood and pick an old classic (for me) Cry Baby with Johnny Depp and Tracy lord and Riki Lake. It is hailarious, it's a musical and has a huge socio political climate. I love a comedy that has a point other then just to make me laugh. Oddly enough my kids like musicals too.(sorry girls)I think what I gained from watching my classmates clips is that I can know gage how far to go with a joke or how serious I can be, It was enlighting.
ReplyDeleteFavorite movies? Too many to name, but I'm definately into comedies and horror films if I had to pick. Additionally, I'm a big time fan of Michael Moore and his documentaries. I think the movie assignment was a pretty good idea; just by seeing some of the videos shown so far I get a good glimpse into the different types of personalities we have in the class.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite tv show of all time is probably got to be Two And A half Men, with the well-known and now infamous for a not so good reason Charlie Sheen. This is my favorite tv show because I find it hilarious. It is just the way I want to be when I grow up, rich and semi-famous. Finally I felt that I learned a lot about my classmates which is that most people aren't rally as mean and scary as we make them out to be in our minds. I think that we have a great group and that we all respect and care about each other.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I know it's true because I broke the tv and no one laughed. Now that shows true character. Thanks guys!
Celia, where did you go? Come back!!!!!!!!!!! Joe K, known as "Joe-K" on the blog, you're a nut! Thanks Andrea and Kyle--props to my peeps all!
ReplyDeletemy favorite show would have to be the fresh prince with will smith because its just so funny and i was young when i first started watching it and i still do whenever its on nick at night lol. i agree with joe, we do have a great group, and omg mandos speach was my favorite, verry funny!
ReplyDeleteI think my all time favorite comic movie is dumb and dumber with Jim Carey I LOVE IT!!! Its hilarious!! Because its not like they make jokes or anything like that but its funny because their just so dorky. There has been times where i just happen to remember the movie and i bust out cracking up at the most random moments. I could watch it over and over and it never gets old its just always so funny i think its just Jim Carey. Well i think we have avery interesting group. We are all different and like one of my classmates said "We all respect each other" which is thee most important thing that way we are all very comfortable in front of each other and we dont find it troublesome getting in front of the class when it comes to speeches =)

ReplyDeleteI didn’t like my first post so I deleted it, but here’s my final one.
I would say that my favorite movie is Sixteen Candles. I love John Hughes films there great. His films may be from the past, but its cool how people can still relate and enjoy them throughout the generations. Sixteen Candles has a good sense of humor in it and I love comedy in movies and TV programs. I agree with everyone who has posted so far, which is that we have a great group in the class. I do think that we can learn at least a little bit from people by there clips that they have chosen. I always say that people can learn from others by each others interest and likes.
Kylen--Thanks for loaning me your "Hangover" DVD--it was rediculous! The tiger part in the car was my favorite! And yes "Igg-ster" I agree that Mando got some good laughs for his speech! Celia, I cannot believe people your age watch 16 candles--I like your idea of not only using the film clips for analysis but also giving us a glimpse into the speaker's taste and sensibilites! Sandra
ReplyDeleteHoping I'm not too late for this blog :).
ReplyDeleteMoving on... favorite movie? Oh, this is too difficult! It's a bit challenging for me to pinpoint a favorite movie. As much as I love Madonna, I can't say her movies are my favorites (for reasons you will understand if you ever tried to sit through one!), though I do love Evita ;). I love most movies with Angelina Jolie because she is brilliant, but I really love foreign movies. Volver and Zwartboek are two of my favorites. I think I like this genre because, even though I often can't understand the language, I can still understand the characters, the themes, and relate without language, and it shows a lot about how people can connect with others on a non-verbal level, a deeper level of understanding. Anyway, I think in class, from seeing all the clips, we just learn about how different we all are. Each clip was so different from the next (well, except from seeing The Hangover twice, hehe!), so it really shows how much the personalities of the audience all vary =)
For my favorite movie, there are too many good movies to name, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,"the 6 episode of "Star War," "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Weather Man" and many many others. I also love Hong Kong movies and Japanese movies. Nevertheless, this scene from the "Closer" came to my mind once I knew that we have to make a speech about a clip from a show or movie, so I chose it. There are only four characters in this movie, but they are great actors and actresses. The script is excellent; the lines reflect the characters well and makes them and their emotion more realistic. "Closer" sure is one of my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI hope the clip I showed from "Closer" did not bore anyone. I know this one was a bit quiet for 7 in the morning. I was pleased no body fell asleep.LOL...
Thank you guys, you guys are so great!!!

ReplyDeleteMy all time favorite tv show is "Friends"...this show is very funny. Even though I already watched almost all the episodes years ago, I am still watching the rerun now. It gives me a good laugh especially if I am so tired from work. The show is about six good friends who have anything in common but somehow they manage to build a good relationship to each others. Also, I love to watch romantic comedies and animation. Finally, thank you guys for being so nice.

ReplyDeleteFavorite movies are so hard to choose. Currently I'm madly in love with the film Eagle vs. Shark. If anyone's a fan of Flight of the Conchords on HBO, you'd probably like it. I love laughs, but a lot of mainstream comedy movies don't appeal to me. And I do love anything with Maureen O'Hara or Jimmy Stewart.
Film is such a dominant form of entertainment in the West. I think those speeches acted as another icebreaker, just because I feel we can get a good idea about a person by what they like to watch and how they react to what they see. I know I wasn't the only one choking up during that dog movie preview.
My favorite movie? It is hard to say, but the most recent is "Avatar", in a long run, i like to watch "Stargate" and "Stargate Atlantis", the most recent TV show that i like is "The Legend of the Seeker", it is a nice fantasy show, nothing special perhaps, but with sencere emotions of main charachters and amazing scenes of nature.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an all-time favorite movie or program. To be honest, I have a hard time paying attention to movies and programs. But when I do watch, I tend to pay attention more to comedies, war movies, and movies that require thinking.
ReplyDeleteWe had a wide variety of movies for the speeches and I thought it was interesting that even though we brought different movies, it wasn't hard to relate to what others had to say. The movies we chose reflect our different experiences in life and what matters most to us, but we're all able to relate to each other.
I think that everyone in class showed a video/clip that they enjoyed. The reason that I showed the movie CRASH is becuase I enjoy movies that leave you you thinking. Movies that have a powerful voice catch my eye. If its not an intresting movie I tend to fall asleep. haha. What I have learned about audiences is that they love humores movies. So if you want to get the aduience awake or just catch their eyes, humor will never fail.

ReplyDeleteThe movie clip of sex and the city is in fact my all time favorite movie.I have watched every episode of sex and the city so i'm in love with the problems these grils face. I love drama, romantic, and fun movies and the movie sex and the city is all three put together. especielly it has family and friend issues which is important in my life. I tend to feel the emotion of the movie very deeply so I pretend im part of the drama.lol.
We had many perspectives on different movie clips in which I never thought about. I learned to open my eyes more on what kimd of issues each scenes protray than before. It was very interesting how two pf our classmates pivked the same scene from the same movie, while having their own perspective of the scene. Can't wait for more speeches.

ReplyDeleteMY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE hands down has got to be "A Knights Tale"
starring the Heath Ledger. I love this movie because overall it's
really funny and its an inspirational film that taught me lying the
reach my dreams is okay.. Just kidding.. BUT it did teach me to never
give up and even I can be become an ultimate champion.. Whatever that
translates into today's time. Usually I like humor because I love to
laugh and if love is involved then that's okay too :) What I learned
about audience from these presentations is that since we are all
different races, ages, and genders we all have different likes and
preferences. With that said there was a wide variety of clips showed
and everyone processed the information differently because we all
interpret things in our own way.

ReplyDelete-sorry about the typo i meant to say "Lying to"
I think my favorite show of all time is Law and Order SVU. I have seen every episode (thank you netflix), and almost all were amazing. What I like most about it is that they kind of pluck the story lines from the papers, so often they will have their version of what happened, of course saying it is a coincidence that the same type of situation happened a couple months previously. I also like their inclusion of gay characters and themes. The gay men represented in this show have not been the stereotypes you see on other shows. As you may remember from my speech there is Dr Huang, the psychologist, but also Fin's son is gay, and they have featured many gay story lines. One of my favorite was when they outed a star football player who they though killed his lover (who turned out to be his husband). It really goes to show that you cant stereotype gays! My favorite episodes though are when the person who is doing the killings is straight up insane and the episode is crazy intense, like on the season finale last year, or the most reason episode. I actually once considered being a criminal psychologist, before settling on surgeon (being a pre-law major was my lie on the first speech, I am a pre-med major).
ReplyDeleteI like intense dramatic movies. I like them to make me think. I also really enjoy kids movies, and I have probably seen them all because I have a 3 and 7 year old at home. I am not a big fan of romantic comedies I always find them too cheesy. I dont like movies that are just gory to be gory i.e. saw. My favorite movie is probably avatar right now, but of all time maybe volver or laberinto del fauno. I hate brokeback mountain its just a completely dysfunctional gay relationship.
I think that seeing everyones clips can really show us what kind of interests they have, and also introduced me to a few movies I have never seen before. I really want to see that dog movie. I think a lot of the clips were really thought provoking and kind of show you where peoples heads are.
I think this was a good assignment we all got to see different movies and really learn what our peers like to watch on their free time..i liked the more humoures clips myself. good assignment

ReplyDeletefavorite of all time is a tough one, I think I'd have to say "boondock saints" though. I like mainly comedies and actions. this was a fun assignment. it was good to see a few people make some thought provoking points with their scenes.
i have several favorite movies. best of all time is "Forrest Gump". i love it because its just a movie that has everything you can ask for. it can make you luagh, cry and keep you at the egde of your seat. I really like "Four Brothers", because it always reminds me of my three best friends and i. we are brothers and of different races. oh yeah every Rocky movie but Rocky 5. that one sucked! lastly FOOTBALL movies are friday night lights, invincible, remember the titans, and the blind side. i really liked this assignment. it makes it easier to make a speech and not a nerve recking and i hope that we get to do something like this again!

Um I don't have a all time favorite movie or program. I don't know why I don't. I like Humor, Action, Documentaries, Crime/Gangster, Horror, Historical, War, and some Adventure.
ReplyDeleteEveryone had different kinds of movies but well at least I think almost everyone was familiar with the movies and or could relate to the topic being presented.
