Groups and Bands

Hi Gang--we are 25% of our way through the spring semester! Hooray for you hard working students! Those info speeches were so interesting--Thanks for the great enthusiasm! Now...this week we'll start on your group speeches...and bands are my favorite kinds of groups to observe! There's always a leader right? Oh, and there's always drama! Sometimes they break up and one goes solo, one hits rehab, one ends up in reality TV...It's always a suprise! As we prepare to write and present group speeches, think about your favorite band. Tell us who they are and what kind of music they make--How long have you been a fan? What's ONE THING we thing we can learn about public speaking (or performing) from your favorites? Or what can we learn from their mistakes? Rock on people!

My favorite group band is Linkin Park. The name of each of the individual is Chester Bennington who is the vocalist also the head leader of this group, Rob Bourdon who is the drummer, Brad Delson who is the lead guitar, and backing vocalist, David Farrell ("Phoenix") who is bass guitar person also the backing vocalist, Joseph Hahn ("Mr. Hahn") who is the turntables, keyboard, also the backing vocalist, and finally Mike Shinoda who is the second in line vocalist, a rhythm guitar, and he is the keyboard person. The type of music that Linkin Park does is like a mixture of rap rock and heavy metal. I’ve been a fan for about 4 years now. The one thing that I favor about their public speaking (or performance) is that they rehearse a lot until everyone in the band agrees to a one hundred percent satisfaction. Also when they sing, the songs that come out are strong and loud with a lot of pride in it which brings confidence. One thing that seems to be a mistake is that as a group if someone doesn’t agree to want they want makes the whole process as group fall apart, but luckily they are well known friends and family so they comfort one another. SO.......
    ROCK ON!!! EVERYONE

I'm not sure I have a favorite "band" per-se but my favorite musical artist/performer is Sufjan Stevens. He does perform with a band though, so I think it counts. Anyway, he typically does indie/folk music with pianos, guitars, banjos, flutes, etc. His latest album, however, is more experimental and uses a lot of computerized noises. I have been a fan of his music since around 2006. So about 5 years. I was lucky to be able to go to a performance of his last year and there were lots of ways he kept the audience entertained. In his shows he uses lots of different bizarre costumes as well as movies that project behind him while he sings. He also does a number of dances to his music. During his show he likes to take breaks and talk to the audience. He explained what a few of his songs meant and what the inspiration was behind them. He told a very interesting narrative about the artist who inspired a lot of his music and who's artwork he used for the cover of his most recent album. Because I am a fan of the music, it was amazing to hear first hand how he was inspired.
Because we will be giving speeches in our classroom, we might not have as much insight as to what our audience is interested in, however, it is important to keep in mind that if the audience is interested in the subject being presented, it will be a more exciting experience for everyone.

  3. I'm not partial to any music and keep an open mind towards all music. I've taken the world music class at SCC to expand my horizon.

The only musical group that I consistently follow is a Japanese female group called AKB48, and sometimes, their sister branches too. They make Japanese pop music and I've been a fan for 3-4 years now.

What we can learn from them is their ability to control their nervousness. Many of the girls have admitted to being nervous before doing any live shows. Especially in the music industry, there is a lot of pressure on you to do everything perfectly. So, rehearsal is key.

I currently do not listen to any music from boy bands except 2pm (South Korean boy band) but stopped listening to them after their lead member, Jaebeom was terminated from the band.

I used to really love Shinhwa (earlier South Korean boy band). They were the first ones I was introduced to when I began listening to K-Pop and J-Pop music about eight years ago.

The members of Shinhwa are no longer together but when they were a group they sang Korean Pop, R&B, and Hip hop. I was a fan of them for four years.

What we can learn from Shinhwa in speech preparation is to keep working hard and never give up. South Korea introduces many girl and boy bands and despite the competition for popularity and fans, Shinhwa's dedication to their music and their fans lead them to become one of South Korea's longest lasting boy bands. Shinhwa lasted for 10 years!!!

  5. My favorite band is The Black Eyed Peas who play American hip hop music. The group is composed of rapper/muti-instructmentalist Will.i.am, rappers Apl.de.ap and Taboo, and singer-rapper Fergie. I have been a fan of the Black Eyed Peas sense I was in high school, which its been four years. One thing you can learn from them about public speaking is their cooperation with one another. They are a band compose of four rappers with their own unique kind of style. With their outstanding cooperation with one another they are able to compose a song, which works for all of them and present it together flawlessly just like a speech. This is like a group speech, with enough effort it is possible to create a speech the whole group can do.

  6. I have two favorite musicians - one a single artist and one a group. Since I both view them as my number one favorites, I can't just write about one (that's not fair!), so you get to hear about two!

My absolute favorite single artist goes by the name of Miranda Lambert. (She is engaged to Blake Shelton who is quite possibly the most gorgeous man alive, so I guess you could consider them a group!) Lambert is a country singer with what I find to be a very special "twang" about her voice. I've been a fan of country music since I was just a little kid, but Lambert has been my favorite artist for just several months. I purchased her cd, Revolution, off of iTunes and it permanently stays in the cd changer in my car.

My second favorite, or rather tied-with-Miranda-Lambert-for-number-one-favorite, is Brooks & Dunn. They are a classic country group that got together in 1991, but before their pairing they were both single selling artists. Recently, they "broke up," but I am certain that their music will live on. I have been a fan of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn for as long as I can remember - their music reminds me of my childhood growing up on the farm and some of my very first horse shows. In my opinion, My Maria is their greatest song. If you have not had the pleasure of listening to it, let me provide you with the means to do so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZSiBj4vCiY

One thing we can learn for both of these artists is that courage is key. If you have confidence in yourself and what you would like to achieve, then you get out their on your stage and do it!

The best way to learn is to learn from your mistakes. When I was at the Brooks and Dunn concert last summer, I noticed and likely the rest of the audience as well, that they started singing the wrong lyrics to a song. But they laughed it off and turned around to jokingly yell and the guitar player for HIM messing up! Mistakes happen, but they went right on singin'!

  7. My favorite band, wow that's a hard one. Currently I love a band by the name of Jesus Culture, whose lead singer is Kim Walker, because of the way they worship. I just heard of them maybe about a year ago and loved them ever since. They are a christian band and every time I hear a song from them, it gives me the chills. You could tell that they mean every word that they sing. Every song they write, they write with such passion.

One thing that I love about them is that every time they get on stage, it isn't just a performance to entertain. You could tell that they loving what they do. If they do get nervous they don't show it, their purpose is far more important than their nervous. I look forward to their new songs because they never disappoint me. You should check them out =)

  8. One of my favorite bands is Linkin Park. They play alternative rock/metal type music with a little bit of rap rock in it. I have been a fan of theirs since I was a teenager because they were the “it” band back in grade school from where I came from. One thing we can learn from them is that you should always enjoy and have fun while performing. At first it may be a little scary, but after a while you need to let your shield down and rock on.

  9. My favorite band changes week to week but I really enjoy Avenged Sevenfold. They are a rock band and I have been listening to them for probably seven years. The first time I saw them live it was pretty lackluster. They didn't seem very excited to be there. Fortunately, I gave them another chance and it was awesome. They were enthusiastic and had really really cool props.

  10. I actually have two favorite bands/groups. They are both from Taiwan.
The first one is called 五月天 or Mayday. It has five members: Ahshin(阿信), the lead vocal; Monster(怪獸), band leader and guitar; Stone(石頭), guitar; Masa(瑪莎), bass guitar; and GuanYou(冠佑), drums. They play many different types of music but mostly pop rock. I have been a fan for 4 years. One thing that we can learn about them is their way of expressing themselves. They put a lot of ideas and feelings into the music that they wrote, but they always express it in a humorous or relaxed way.
The second one is more a group than a band. It is called S.H.E. It includes Selina, Hebe and Ella. They usually sing "Mandopop" and they are very good at harmonizing. I have been a fan of them for almost 10 years now. I like their music a lot and that they are so close that they are like sisters. One thing that I think I have learned from them is that they never give up and they would never leave each other behind. Last November, Selina was injured when filming a TV drama. She had third degree burns on more than 50% of her body. She did not give up but tried very hard to get better. Hebe and Ella stayed with her, encouraged and supported her. Finally, last month, Selina took the courage to face the public when she was discharged from the hospital. I learned from them that a little tragedy does not mean the end of the world. If you try hard enough, you can overcome anything.

  11. When I read the intro to this blog post the band that came instantly to me was the Beatles. I grew up listening to them because my mom was such a big fan and when I travelled abroad I was able to go to Liverpool and take this really amazing Beatles tour around where each of them grew up, went to school, etc. i even got to go to "Strawberry Fields"! Anyways, I really learned a lot about them as individuals as well as them as a band. I think something we could really learn from them (as well as any band) is to not let people's egos and personal feelings get in the way of what's really important; which is to work together as a group and create something great. For them it was music and for us it is a successful speech. It's easy for people's personal feelings and beliefs to get in the way of what's truly important. I think it's a good idea for us all to take a step back from the group and take a breath, and then return with an open mind.

  12. I dont really have a "favorite band" but today I woke up to a link of Best Coast and I absolutely love them so for today, they're my favorite group. I think the thing we can learn from them is their ability to work together so well and somehow end up with original work and stay composed during shows. They are a perfect example of what it means to work together and be able to feed off each other to preform well.

  13. Nickleback is my favorite band. Their music is soft rock. I've been listening to their music for about six years now from the radio and such. The thing I believe I can learn from them is how to be calm and relaxed on stage, like being in the spot light is something I am totally comfortable with.

  14. I don't recall ever having a favorite band and I don't think I ever will. I've never been a big fan of it because I listen to a wide range of music and it's too hard to pick. I'm choosing N*E*R*D not because it's my favorite band, but it's just the first one that popped into my head and I'm familiar with them.

N*E*R*D stands for No One Ever Really Dies. The lead singer is Pharrell Williams and he is the main force behind the group. Not only does he sing lead vocals, but he also plays percussion, keyboards/piano/, and the rhythm guitar. Chad Hugo is the lead guitarist and he also does keyboards/piano, saxophone, and bass guitar. Shay Haley also plays percussion, drums, and backup vocals.

N*E*R*D has a range of sounds in their music. Including but not limited to: rock, funk, hip hop, electronic, R&B, pop, etc. I've been a fan for a really long time, since the sixth or seventh grade I believe, so about eight years now.

One thing that N*E*R*D can teach you is to embrace what makes you unique and special and use it to your advantage. Use your differences to stand out and also to help people come together. They help people to recognize that yes we are all different, but we are all human beings and we bleed the same blood.

Just a little tidbit from the song Breakout:

"Just as long as we got the same thing in our veins, you and I we are both the same. I bail you out, show you what should see. One love, N*E*R*D peace."

  15. I don't really have a favorite band, but enjoy Boys 2 Men. Boyz II Men is an American R&B vocal group. The band started in 1988 with five members but two have left. The reason I enjoy listening to their music because the band puts emotional thoughts in their song. One of my favorite song with the band is "I'll Make Love to You." I've been a fan since I heard their song, maybe when I was in middle school. In public speaking, people can learn from them is group work. They have work with eachother for a long time and even though there been break up, the group is still working hard together. Also, they been on tour and perform so it show us that they are not afraid to be in front of millions of people. There is so much things to learn from them because they have been a group for a very long time.

  17. I don't really have a favorite band that is currently active but one of my favorite girl groups was Destiny's Child. They were together from the late 90's to 2004 and they were an R&B group. I have been a fan of them since they had first came out. I feel that they have very good performance skills because they always harmonized very well together and meshed well together making sure that they gave the fans a good show which is great. When they messed up with lyrics on a song or something then they would just keep on going and that's why they're my favorite group.

  18. My favorite band is Disturbed. I have been a fan for a little more than 10 years. They are a metal/rock band. I have been to six concerts to see them and I even have a tatto of one of their past CD covers on my arm. I love this band. They have never come out with a song or album that I did not love. After having gone to so many of their shows, one of the main things that lead singer David Draiman does well (besides sing) is play to the crowd. In between songs he speaks to the crowd and gets everyone fired up. This is not the type of show you sit down and enjoy. Draiman has specifically called people out before because he saw them sitting down. This interaction and relationship he creates with the crowd is something I think every public speaker can learn from. Disturbed is playing with Korn at Arco Arena (or whatever it is called now) at the beginning of March! I can't wait to go!

  19. I really don't know band singers, most of my favorite artists are solo artists; Usher, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton and a few others. However, I hear alot of scandals that follow these bands especially when they break up. Take for instance, New Edition when Bobby Brown broke off from the group, he truly did end up on reality tv and drug rehab. Also, is B2K, Omarion and his former band-mates Lil Fizz, Raz-B and J-Boog formed this group but when the group broke off, Omarion went solo and I don't know what happened to rest of the group. Unfortunately, I can't tell what it is we should learn from these bands except to learn to be more patient and tolerant especially in dealing with people from different backgrounds - culturally or ethnically.

  20. Hello,
Like Bea, I don't really know any bands. There are a few but I don't listen to them enough to recognize them as a favorite or be familiar with some of their songs. I noticed in every band there is that one person that stands out the most and has a career after the band splits while thee others go else where and never heard of again.

  21. Wasup,
really to be honest i dont have a favorite "Band". i dont really like bands in general. although i do like Guns n Roses but not a favorite. on ther other hand i do enjoying "Rap groups". or "hip hop Groups". my favorite would have to be "Travis Porter". which is a group of 3 african american hip hop artist. i doubt they would ever break up because for some reason none of them would be good "solo". And from what i can see i dont think there is a general leader in the group, they all pretty much have a distinctive style and sound that sets them apart but none come forth as a "leader". been a fan for maybe the last year or so cause they are relatively new to hip hop. and each of them speak out whatever they feel but in different creative manners. some how im attracted to that type of music. i can learn how to speak out in a creative way from them each.
    Sincerely, Raymond Cardoza
