What about personal experiences????

That narrative ROCKED! Thanks for a great laugh and demonstration of creativity! Now, on to the use of personal experiences--can we use them in our info speeches? YES! Audiences, as out textbook reminds us--respond well to a mix of research based information and personal experiences to support your main points of your speech! How do you credit these personal experiences you ask? Something like this:

FOOD IS GOOD
"Now that you know how important food is, let me tell you about the time I myself ate some food!" Woo-hoo! (Ok-- not too exciting, but you get the idea!) Followed by research: AFter I realized eating food would curb my hunger, I discovered an editorial in Time Magazine from May of 2007. In this piece, everyone polled claimed to like eating some sort of food! Smith actually stated, "Food keeps me alive!"

Your turn: Pick an overly generic, way-too-basic topic, make up a title for the pretend speech and then link a personal experience as well as a faux (or real) research citation to support it using clear signposting (words that label the outline parts, such as "according to" or "Research states..."). Just like I did above. Also, in lieu of our meeting this week, please think about technology and the ways it has enhanced or set-back public oratory. Spend some time reading about this either on-line or in the library and we'll discuss it after the impromptu midterm. Don't forget to memorize the outline for next Wed and to bring in your article to write the introduction about afterward! Email me with any questions this week at idnasss@yahoo.com!

  1. Topic: Birthdays are alot of fun

Though it's not always easy getting older, birthdays are a great way to spend time with your family and friends and celebrate life. The great thing about birthdays is that we all have one! My birthday, for instance, is always alot of fun. I will never forget my 23rd birthday. We had an informative speech due in my communications class, and I was really nervous about it (plus I had spent most of the day at happy hour with some friends to celebrate). As 7:43pm approached, I walked up the ramp to my classroom and noticed a big sign on the door, "Class has been cancelled due to Sara's birthday. We should all go celebrate life." I was so excited. I thought, "this is how it should be every year." And so I went out to dinner with everyone my communications class and we had a blast. It was just what I needed to get over being another year older. Cosmopolitan Magazine agrees with this, as they have reported, "Your birthday should be treated as a national holiday. With the hectic lifestyles we live now, it's important to take one day a year to celebrate your life and be thankful for it."

  2. Topic: Language is important.

Our civilization would be in the dark ages if there was no such thing as verbal communication or language. Our social interactions are based mostly in the verbal expression of our thoughts and ideas. According to my language arts instructors, verbal language is the most efficient method for sharing information beween people. According to my cognitive psychology instructor, language allows for the development of more and more complex mental schemes. Our perception of this world and our surroundings would be completely limited with the inability to label items, describe items, share ideas, etc. My friend believes, I do not, that we would all be like Helen Keller if we were unable to communicate with words.

  3. Topic: People affect your mood.

Although it is easy to believe that we control our own moods, others in reality, actually affect how we feel. For example, I was sad from getting a B on an economics exam, but then my sister told me a funny joke and gave me a warm hug, and I immediately felt happy. I was unable to maintain my feeling of sadness, because her contagious happiness forced itself upon me. According to Dr. Phil, other people affecting your emotions is not an uncommon occurrence. According to him and his research, it has been shown that people's moods are affected by others around them.

  4. Topic: Laughter

We've all heard the saying, "Laughter is the best medicine". But can laughter help us learn more effectively? According to Science Daily, Wanzer's research concludes yes. Students reported learning more from teachers who use humor effectively. He says "Humor seems to be beneficial and productive...it helps get the point across in any situation." Who knew laughter could be related to grades? (Maybe you already knew this, so you signed up for this class!)

  5. SLEEPING: GOOD OR BAD FOR YOU?

We spend a third of our lives sleeping. Is it a waste of time? I used to love to sleep. All day in fact, with my windows blacked out. But now, once I wake up, I can't lay there anymore.
Sleep is supposed be good for your health. Just ask my wife who regularly yells: "If you wake me up again I'm going to hurt you!". It's hard. I'm a nightowl and the floorboards creek. Rip Van Winkle fell asleep (for 20 years!) and when he woke up his wife was DEAD! That's not very healthy. They say the older we get the less sleep we need anyway. Does that mean, eventually, I'll be able to stay awake for weeks on end without drugs? Just think how much we could get done. Some people love to sleep and dream, but I never dream about anything good, just stuff that makes no sense and interrupts the sleep I DO want to get. We need to evolve some more as a species folks, so that a 2 hour power nap is all we need. Oh well, I'm getting tired, time for some coffee.

  6. Wearing pajamas just about anywhere…

I am guilty of this. I love to wear my pajamas just about anywhere. I wear it when I go shopping sometimes. For instance, to Target, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, the mall and Blockbuster. I learned that not caring about your appearances to an extent made me a much more comfortable and relax person. Of course I only wear to places that doesn’t really matter. I would never wear my pajamas to some place like Paesanos restaurant, which by the way is a pretty great place. However; according to my discovery on The Valley Vanguard that “wearing pajamas to class shows lazy tendencies of students.” My fight about that is with night classes I want to be more comfortable and relax after a long day of work. Yes, it may show a little of lazy tendencies for class but I really out of all honestly want to be more comfortable and relax after a very long stressful day.

  7. Topic: Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is the first step to good grooming and good health. It is very important for all people. Personal cleanliness can affect many aspects of a person's life. It can aid in a person sleeping behaviors and social life. I know for me I have to shower every night before I go to bed or I feel dirty and do not have a good night sleep. Personal hygiene may also play a huge role on a person's social life. Not a lot of people want to hang out with someone that stinks and looks scrubby. According to New York Times, 86% of people would rather hang out with people who keep up their personal hygiene. This shows that keeping clean and presentable is very important to our everday lives.

  8. Is it possible to eat healthy while on the go?

Whether you want to or not, you’re going to end up eating at a fast food place. Maybe you’re traveling or maybe you are strapped for time (or cash,) or hanging out with your kids that don’t care what they eat as long as it tastes good. I have been guilty of this behavior a time or two. However, according to a nutritional ariticle posted by Coach Levi Taylor. You do have the ability to eat healthy while on the go by making good choice such as sald over a burger or water over soda.
If we follow some of his tips you could learn to integrate this healhty eating in your everyday life.

  9. Topic: Christmas time is the best time ever.

Christmas time remembers me my family and friends who work a lot during the year in order to get free time in Christmas. Many people in this world avoid Christmas, but for me, Christmas is an opportunity to love all people who is really important, and the meaning of Christmas is not presents or decorations. According to the article :' True Mean of Christmas" in http://www.llerrah.com/truemeaningofchristmas.htm tells us the meaning of every symbol in Christmas and I agreed with the meaning of a candle which is Jesus is the light of the world and he will kick out the darkness. Christmas is the time ever and people in this world needs to understand what important is to be with our family which represents God in earth.

  11. A walk a day keeps the doctor away. At the very least I try to take a brisk walk eveyday. Physical activity relaxes me and keeps me balanced and focused. It is also very beneficial to my health. Since I am not a fan of doctors and sterile white lab coats I try to avoid as many problems as possible. I can help to avoid problems by regularly being physically active. This way when I inevitably have to see a doctor I don't have to sit there and listen to them give me bad news. According to an article from the Feb. 1, 1995 issue of Physical Activity and Public Health, "it has been estimated that as many as 250,000 deaths per year in the United States, approximately 12% of the total, are attributable to lack of regular physical activity".

  12. Topic: "Got milk?"

In watching my child consume milk I can't help but think about how this nutriciously rich drink has provided sustenance to humans and creatures alike throughout our history. As proposed by the U.S. Dairy producers, "milk does a body good" and so we all have had it as babes in some form or another be it natural, soy, formula or whatever. Many good products are made from it. My favorite is ice cream (rocky road). It is said that Cleopatra even bathed in it to keep her skin beautiful. Be it used for alimentary purposes or cosmetic reasons this simple drink is very important. I look over at my child and the only question that seems to come to his mind is, "got milk?".

  13. Topic: Weather predictions

Don't we all enjoy seemingly inaccurate weather predictions from meteorologists. According to weather.com, the rain today was not due to arrive until early afternoon. Therefore, I figured running to the gym around 9:30 am would avoid the run. It started to drizzle after a few blocks, then the rain fell consistently heavier until I was soaked. Fortunately, I had a shirt underneath which was reasonably dry. I must admit that although it was unexpected, the rain was quite refreshing.

  14. Topic: Clutter Causes Stress

Do you consider yourself "stressed out?" Look around at work and at home - do you have a lot of clutter lying around? I know I do!

Studies have shown that clutter can actually cause more stress and decrease productivity. In an article by Elizabeth Scott on About.com states how having a more organized home can create a sanctuary and result in a calmer state of mind. This can decrease stress and also increase productivity.

A more organized work space or home will decrease the time and energy needed to look for papers, supplies, etc because everything will have its own place. But, in our society, most of us are pretty busy and don't have the time to spend on staying clean. As a result, our homes and offices often get more and more cluttered. Then we have to devote a huge chunk of time to clean up only to have it cluttered again. As a solution, Scott also wrote another article with quick cleaning tips even for those of us constantly working on one project or another.

Although I loathe it, I have a tendency to be pretty messy. I just never really find the time to put things away and it only gets worse and worse until I have to devote an entire weekend to get things looking decent (not even really clean!). Although cleaning sucks, I do find it therapeutic as I often use my pent up frustrations as my source of energy. And, when everything is clean and orderly, I do feel much better. I feel really productive and even proud of myself.

So the next time you're feeling stressed out, take a deep breath, turn up the volume on your favorite songs, and do a little cleaning therapy so you can reap the benefits of a calmer environment and a calmer state of mind.

  15. Topic: Shoes are Beneficial
After many years of injuring my feet walking every where barefoot, I finally discovered the wonders of foot protection, more commonly known as shoes. One I realized all the benefits of wearing shoes, I began to look into the subject. Acoording to Jim Footman of Walkers Monthly, over 90% of people prefered to wear shoes when walking! It even had quotes from people who had been saved from devastating injury by their shoes. I'm proud to be part of this exclusive group, and plan to continue to wear shoes as frequently as possible.

  16. Topic: How to use a condom
    Thomas McDowell!!!

I believe that condoms are effective at protecting you against stds if used correctly. Dick Stifferson from condoms condoms condoms.com says that condoms are not only fun to make baloons with, but can keep stds at bay if placed over your shwing shwa. I also am lead to believe that they can give you the ability to fly, baloon animals, fight off terrorists, save your marriage, and improve your golf swing. Just the other day I was approached by a dirty mugger. With no weapons I thought fast and pulled a condom from my pocket and flung it at the attacker. in his confusion I ran into the night. Thanx condoms 1,000,000 uses and counting.

  17. Topic:use of computers

Computers and the technology today allow people to receive any type of information in the world right at their fingertips. With all the written information that is in libraries, it seems as though people just skip right over that and head straight for the computer. Its as thought they feel that the computer does all the work for them and finds all the information that they need.
Research states that children today are brought up to much on relying on the Internet and the computer. I think that it would have been more useful if I were taught when I was younger to rely on using resources from the library or by looking it up in books.

Computers have become too much of a reliable resource. Even though they are able to give you almost any type of information that you are looking for, there is a certain point where it is better to know how to use a book or go to the library.

In my opinion technology has enhanced public speaking. Before public speaking was limited to only those who could make it out to hear the speaker in person. However, now with radio and television it is broadcasted throughout the whole world within seconds. No one has to see the speaker in person they just have to tune in at a certain time or even record it.
